Hey, I played this flute to a pair of beautiful ducks this very day! They sure seemed to enjoy the song!!!

"Long Beak"

Origin:

After this flute was created all it needed was a totem my Friends! On the evening it was finally finished, I did not receive any sign of what it would be, so I figured whatever it was, would come the next day...

Ravens and Crows belong to the Corvidae, or "Crow" family of birds. They are known for their mischievous ways, their playful personalities, and very loud, & rough sounding caws!

And...........That is exactly what woke me up on the morning this totem would come to be! The birds almost sounded like they were sitting on the roof of our home!

I will be honoring these birds in yet another flute soon to come so stay tuned my friends!

Now this is not the only thing I have to tell you about this totem, because my Grandfather played a part in it as well, as this one has always been his favorite! A totem just like it resides on his personal Swampfox flute of many years ago, which hangs on the wall in his living room to this very day! :))

We see my Grandfather often these days - as often as possible, since he is getting very old. He still gets around well and is sharp as a razor - remembering the old stories which he presents to my Children as he once did for me.

When I told him that another abstract raven totem would be created, he was happy to hear this news. It was then that he started into the true story of a time when he was hiking and camping alone in the mountains somewhere in Oregon.

I know the story was told for the Children to get a laugh, but being one myself, I had to sit and listen as well! :))

It seems that one day many years ago my Grandfather was hiking near the Columbia, where the river turns north, somewhere near Clatskanie.

A Raven the size of a large hawk flew over his head. Grandfather thought nothing of the bird, but that was soon to change!!! As he continued hiking he noticed something truly amazing....

I will try to tell this in my Grandfather's words as close to the story as possible. :))

"As I was hiking a Raven flew over, turned in the air, and landed a short distance away, then began walking towards me. The bird started squawking & making some sort of croaking noises and seemed to be trying to communicate.

I had an old bamboo flute which I took from my pack and as I started playing, the bird moved a few steps closer staring at the instrument. When I would stop playing, the Raven would began his croaking and cooing! We must have been there 30 minutes or so speaking to each other in the Raven talk and finally I shoved the old flute back into the pack. Looking again at the bird, he searched my eyes turning his head back and forth as if the long beak hindered him from seeing straight into my eyes.

We had bonded somehow, but it was time to move on, and so I thought that would be the end of it.

I started back on the track heading north and as my feet hit the ground, the Raven's wing beats above, seemed to be in sequence!

The bird flies ahead and lands, apparently trying to be my guide!! I wondered if he had some sort of treasure hidden somewhere and maybe wanted me to follow. What would the treasure be? Maybe a dinosaur skeleton, a mammoth, or a thousand year old cache of walrus ivory Raven's treasure!!!

But I decided to head my own way and turned Northwest leaving the Raven as he flew still to the North.

Twenty minutes pass & without me knowing exactly when it happened, I notice the raven is leading again!!!

After another mile I decide to stop for the evening and pitch camp. I made a small fire and some hot chocolate then sat back to relax, the Raven no where in sight! A couple of hours pass and the bird returns flying in and landing just yards away! I remember feeling flattered by his companionship, and he was not even afraid of the fire!

I held out a piece of bread and he looked it over but would not take it from my hand. Finally pitching it to him he quickly gobbled it down.

In no time the bird was coming closer and closer to take the bread. Now we as humans are creatures who like to touch. Soon the Raven was so close that I reached out and touched his rough feathers on his back, and boy did he get upset!!! That bird squawked and screamed as if I had speared him, then flew off in the distance landing 30 yards away! He was down right mad about the touching still carrying on as if very angry at me for this.

So I just climbed into my sleeping bag and nestled in trying to ignore the bird a while.

Minutes later as I was dozing off for a nap I felt something peaking at my feet! I decided to pretend I was very angry and started screaming loudly at the bird. He did not seem to mind and stayed right there listening until I was tired of doing it.

I fell asleep and dreamed of finding the Raven's treasure. What a great dream it was!

Waking the next morning I found the treasure alright! The Raven had left me out in the cold sleeping by the fire which had long gone out, yet he had spent the night inside the tent!!! It was when I went to roll the tent up that I noticed the treasure he had left in there! It was all of my bread, but in the form of poop!!!!!!

It was if he was saying, "Ah yes, my dear fellow two legged. Allow me, your most grateful Raven, to poop most fulsome in your tent as a gesture of my humble esteem."
